Robert Parker and Hiully have one thing in common: they both serve a Rhone wine at their Thanksgiving table. Hiully is pouring her Thanksgiving crowd Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône ($15.99). is a deep plum with violet reflections. Aromas of bright berry fruits and licorice give way to a medium bodied palate with elegant flavors of red currant and gingerbread. The peppery components of this 100% Syrah based Côtes du Rhône pairs well with both roasted and fried turkeys.
Hiully likes wines with a fair bit of zip and minerality and her Thanksgiving pick fits the bill perfectly, Sabliere Fongrave Blanc ($13.99). This White Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion grapes and it has a bright acidity that stands up to many starters, salads and cheeses of Thanksgiving. It is a lovely wine for those who prefer white with their turkey. Huilly was bowled over by the sheer enjoyment from this super-fun, all-occasion dry white wine.It offers flavors of ripe lemon, banana and yellow apple complemented by notes of pepper, almond and gravelly mineral. The wine has a rich texture, characteristic of the Semillon grape, yet finishes clean and lively as you'd expect from a Sauvignon Blanc. White Bordeaux of this quality is not normally available at this price point.
